New Interactive Website Shows Live Traffic Information

A new state-of-the-art and customizable Spokane Regional Transportation Management Center (SRTMC) website lets drivers know what roads and areas to avoid, before they get stuck in long backups.

The SRTMC spent eight months partnering with an outside, a web design and development firm, to build the new interactive site.  Through much brainstorming, trial and error, and testing, the two companies came up with a website that provides updated traffic information as it happens, displays pictures from live traffic cameras, and provides construction updates so you can plan your commute route around upcoming projects.

24-hours a day you can watch 38 live traffic cameras at www.srtmc.org, read about incidents and events that are automatically updated as they happen, and customize the display to show cameras you want to look at and areas you normally drive.

The SRTMC is the nerve center for area transportation systems, including parts of Kootenai County, controlled and funded by the Cities of Spokane and Spokane Valley, Spokane Transit Authority, Spokane County, Washington State Department of Transportation, and the Spokane Regional Transportation Council.

It is an actual control center of monitors and high tech traffic control equipment located in downtown Spokane at the Intermodal Center (Amtrak rail and Greyhound bus station). Information is gathered in the SRTMC from sources such as electronic sensors in the pavement, live streaming cameras, officers on patrol, and Washington State Department of Transportation highway crews. That up-to-the-minute information is then funneled to the website to keep the driving public informed.

Center operators monitor traffic for potential problems and alert incident response crews to occurences, control dynamic message signs that warn drivers of accidents and delays, and post warning messages to area highway advisory radio stations. So be sure to check www.srtmc.org often, and year-round. In the winter, it lets you know the roads affected by snow and ice, and in the summer you can avoid delays caused by construction projects.
